A long long time ago, the early 80s, in a land far far from the norm, Prince George’s County Maryland. A group of small children were traveling along a county road, about to go over the train track bump, in the far back of a Country Squire station wagon, with no seat belts on their way to play lawn darts!
So many things that were commonplace, socially accepted and sometimes even encouraged in the past are now known to be wrong, stupid or even deadly in modern society. No matter how despicable we find it now. Back then we didn’t know. Individually, many at the time definitely knew. But as a society we were just plain ignorant. Somebody knew lawn darts were dangerous. I’m sure they met fierce opposition and ridicule. But today 9 out of 10 parents would never let their children play with lawn darts. The other one we will use as an example of natural selection.
Is it wrong to look back and down with our more evolved sensibilities on parents in the early 80s who let their kids play with lawn darts? Yes.
They just didn’t know at the time.
