As a student of history I have always known of the heinous actions inflicted upon countless groups by our Government. it has never surprised me because when you give a bunch of petty people power, they abuse it for their own gain. plain and simple truth. You see it every day at work. Managers who couldn’t manage their way out of a paper bag. Restaurant owners whose only qualification was they had enough money to buy a restaurant. Politicians who got elected because they know the right people with tons of money and clout. people with power are always self serving. ALWAYS
We hold this truth to be self evident that the politicians of this country have indeed made it a fundamentally racist Government. It’s up to We the People to change that. Expecting the Government that created the problem to fix it is just plain ridiculous. The 65% of Americans making less than $50,000 a year are the majority. If we as the majority can change the way we think and act towards each other. The rest of the will have to follow along. Or get left behind. It isn’t that hard. We already work and live in the same places. Our kids go to the same schools, we all have similar problems : no money for bills, crappy living conditions, addictions, domestic violence, shit jobs, no future. This is us, Black or White or Latino or Asian or LGBTQ or Legal or Illegal or Citizen. It doesn’t matter. These are our problems and this is our lives. Lives that the people who say they will fix the problem know nothing about.
Racism in this country is real. Fortunately or unfortunately, I grew up in “The Promised Land” of African-American upward mobility. If you drive through Bowie, Maryland you will see a town where black folks have made amazing lives for themselves and their family. Apparently, lives most black families can only dream about. But it seems to do a disservice to these families that their children are going to be taught that because they are black that they are destined for failure because the entire country is racist. Even if that’s not what they see when they leave their house every day. Then they might start to feel bad that they have it so good. Just like white people are supposed to feel bad. But it’s not about black or white at this point. It’s about money. Have or have not. . In my job as a Kona Ice driver I did a party at a children’s dentist. I can say that every couple there, whether same race, mixed race (Black/White. White/Asian, Black/Asian) they were all the same. Typical middle class to upper middle class families, Straight out of the text book.
My point is,,,, If it was possible for the people of Prince George’s County Maryland to make it in our “racist society”. It’s possible every where else.
Reparations is something that is going to happen. Personally I think it’s an important thing that is going to be fucked up by our Government, just like most things. Instead of implementing programs to bring up black folks, they will pander to certain groups and probably do something stupid like send every black person a check with the unwritten message of “here is some money now shut the fuck up and vote for us” .Which since most black folks fall into the 65% of us making shit money. It will go to bills and maybe one of those “someday” purchases. You know, maybe someday I can afford a new TV or a new car or their won washer and dryer. or maybe just get blown on partying. But it wont be enough to create anything substantial, like a future for their families. We need to be working to ensure the future of not just these black folks who are people held back but all of us who are being held back by the policies and prejudices of the Government. Past, Present and Future.
My biggest issue with the current situation in our society is we are so focused on the past and exacting retribution for the sins of the past. The same people who are intent on persecuting the past, are the same people who throw a fit if you even dare to point out the sins of their past. Shady political deals, insensitive comments made 30 years ago or getting into an Ivy League college because your daddy knows some people. Hypocritical assholes. Seeking retribution for the past only blinds you to what’s going on now and thus we have no control over the future. We must learn from the past and work for the future.
